The Department of Pharmacology& Toxicology (Faculty of Medicine) offers a Master of Science Program in Pharmacology. The program, which is thesis based, aims at providing a sound understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of the action of drugs as the basis of therapeutics. Basic course in Pharmacology are followed by advanced courses in the core areas of the discipline such as Cardiovascular, Molecular, Neuro-endocrine, Biochemical/Toxicology and Immunopharmacology. These areas also represent the key areas of research interest of the Departmental academic staff. Research requirements include only thesis option.

To contribute to the development of Kuwait University as a research and Educational institution distinguished for having high quality programs of scientific research, and for being a centre of intellectual and cultural enlightenment which would contribute to societal development.

Mission

To train high quality scientists who will be able to conduct independent pharmacological research and be able to apply their scientific expertise towards societal development by filling positions in research institutions, academia and industry.

Educational Objectives

  • To train graduate students to think critically and logically and to be able to identify scientific problems, design and undertake research projects to address such problems in an independent manner.
  • To impart in graduate students an in-depth knowledge of the various aspects of Pharmacology & Toxicology and to expose them to modern techniques and practical skills necessary to conduct experimental research.
  • To train students to be able to search and critically analyze published research findings.
  • To train students to be able to analyze, interpret, communicate and defend their own experimental data.
  • To introduce students to scientific writing and lecture presentation.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • To carry out in vitro and in vivo pharmacology experiments.
  • To be able to analyze and interpret data obtained from pharmacological experiments.
  • To adequately prepare the students for further studies (Ph.D.) in Pharmacology and a career in Pharmacology either in academia or pharmaceutical industry.
