### LaTeX Thesis Template: Student Guide

## 1. Introduction

This LaTeX package is designed to help Kuwait University graduate students prepare their theses in a consistent academic format. The template includes the main thesis file, preliminary pages, sample chapters, references, appendices, Arabic pages, and formatting files.

Students should edit the provided files while preserving their filenames and basic LaTeX structure.

---

## 2. Folder Contents

### Main file

- **`thesis.tex`**
  This is the main file of the thesis. It controls the structure of the document and connects all other files. Students must compile this file to generate the complete thesis PDF.

### Formatting files

- **`utepcsthesis.sty`**
  Controls the thesis layout, margins, page numbering, spacing, and other formatting requirements. Students should not edit this file.

- **`fancyvrb.sty`**
  A supporting LaTeX package required by the template. Students should not edit or delete it.

### Preliminary pages

- **`titlePage.tex`**
  The English title page. Enter the thesis title, student’s name, degree program, supervisor’s name, co-supervisor’s name if applicable, month, and year.

- **`copyRight.tex`**
  The copyright page. Replace `YEAR` with the appropriate year.

- **`authorizationPage.tex`**
  The thesis publication authorization page.

- **`signpage.tex`**
  The examination committee signature page. Enter the thesis title, student’s name, program, college, supervisor, and committee members.

- **`abstract.tex`**
  The English abstract and keywords.

- **`acknowl.tex`**
  The acknowledgements page.

### Thesis chapters

- **`chapter-introduction.tex`**
  A sample introductory chapter. Replace the sample text with the thesis introduction.

  A sample chapter containing examples of sections, tables, and figures. It may be renamed or used as the basis for additional chapters.

- **`discussion.tex`**
  The conclusion or final discussion chapter.

### References and supplementary sections

- **`ref.bib`**
  The bibliography database containing all references cited in the thesis.

- **`refst.tex`**
  Controls the presentation of the reference list. Students normally do not need to edit this file.

- **`appendix.tex`**
  Used for appendices and supplementary materials.

- **`cv.tex`**
  The student’s curriculum vitae.

### Arabic pages

- **`aarabic.tex`**
  The Arabic abstract.

- **`tarabic.tex`**
  The Arabic title page. Enter the Arabic thesis title, student’s name, program, supervisor’s name, month, and year.

### Sample figures

- **`fig1.pdf`**
- **`fig2.pdf`**

These are example images used in `chapter-i.tex`. Students may replace them with their own figures.

## 3. Recommended Method: Using Overleaf

1. Go to [Overleaf](https://www.overleaf.com).
2. Sign in or create an account.
3. Select **New Project**.
4. Select **Upload Project**.
5. Upload the complete ZIP file without extracting it.
6. Open the project.
7. Confirm that `thesis.tex` is selected as the main document.
8. Click **Recompile** to generate the thesis PDF.

If Overleaf does not automatically select the main file:

1. Open the project menu.
2. Select **Main document**.
3. Choose `thesis.tex`.

Students using a desktop LaTeX program must ensure that all required LaTeX packages, including Arabic-language support, are installed.

---

## 4. Entering Personal and Thesis Information

Open the following files and replace the sample text or red instructions with the correct information:

- `titlePage.tex`
- `copyRight.tex`
- `signpage.tex`
- `abstract.tex`
- `aarabic.tex`
- `tarabic.tex`
- `acknowl.tex`
- `cv.tex`

Students may remove `\textcolor{red}{...}` after entering their final information.

---

## 5. Writing and Organizing Chapters

Each thesis chapter should normally be placed in a separate `.tex` file.

A chapter begins with:

```latex
\chapter{Chapter Title}
```

Sections and subsections can be added as follows:

```latex
\section{Section Title}
\subsection{Subsection Title}
\subsubsection{Subsection Title}
```

To add a new chapter:

1. Create a new file, such as:

```text
chapter-two.tex
```

2. Add the chapter content:

```latex
\chapter{Research Methodology}
Write the chapter text here.
```

3. Open `thesis.tex` and add the new chapter in the appropriate location:

```latex
\include{chapter-two}
```

Do not include the `.tex` extension in the `\include` command.

---

## 6. Adding Figures

Save figure files in the same folder as the thesis files. PDF, PNG, and JPG formats are commonly supported.

A figure can be inserted using:

```latex
\begin{figure}[H]
\centering
\includegraphics[width=0.75\textwidth]{figure-name}
\caption{Description of the figure}
\label{fig:figure-name}
\end{figure}
```

Refer to the figure in the text using:

```latex
Figure~\ref{fig:figure-name}
```

Use simple filenames without spaces, for example:

```text
research-model.pdf
```

---

## 7. Adding Tables

A simple table can be added using:

```latex
\begin{table}[H]
\centering
\caption{Title of the table}
\label{tab:sample}
\begin{tabular}{lcc}
\hline
Category & Frequency & Percentage \\
\hline
Category A & 20 & 40\% \\
Category B & 30 & 60\% \\
\hline
\end{tabular}
\end{table}
```

Refer to the table using:

```latex
Table~\ref{tab:sample}
```

---

## 8. Adding References

References are stored in `ref.bib`. Each source must have a unique citation key.

Example journal article:

```bibtex
@article{alsharhan2020,
  title={Investigating the effects of gender, dialect, and training size on the performance of Arabic speech recognition: E. Alsharhan, A. Ramsay},
  author={Alsharhan, Eiman and Ramsay, Allan},
  journal={Language Resources and Evaluation},
  volume={54},
  number={4},
  pages={975--998},
  year={2020},
  publisher={Springer}
}
```

Cite the source in the thesis using:

```latex
\cite{Alsharhan2020}
```

or:

```latex
\citep{Alsharhan2020}
```

The citation key used in the chapter must exactly match the key used in `ref.bib`.

Overleaf normally processes the bibliography automatically. When using a desktop LaTeX editor, it may be necessary to compile in the following order:

1. `pdflatex thesis`
2. `bibtex thesis`
3. `pdflatex thesis`
4. `pdflatex thesis`

Multiple compilations are necessary to update citations, cross-references, page numbers, and the table of contents.

---

## 9. Cross-References

Use labels to refer automatically to chapters, sections, tables, and figures.

Example:

```latex
\section{Data Collection}
\label{sec:data}
```

Refer to this section using:

```latex
Section~\ref{sec:data}
```

This ensures that numbering is updated automatically when the document changes.

---

## 10. Important Instructions

- Always compile `thesis.tex`, not an individual chapter file.
- Keep all template files in the same folder.
- Do not delete or rename `utepcsthesis.sty`.
- Do not edit formatting commands unless necessary.
- Do not manually type page numbers, figure numbers, table numbers, or citation numbers.
- Use simple filenames without spaces or special characters.
- Keep a backup copy of the thesis project.
- Compile the document regularly to identify errors early.
- Review all red instructional text and replace or remove it before final submission.
- Check the final PDF carefully for formatting, pagination, figures, tables, citations, and missing information.

---

## 11. Files Generated During Compilation

LaTeX automatically creates temporary files such as:

```text
.aux
.log
.bbl
.blg
.toc
.lof
.lot
.synctex.gz
```

These files are used during compilation and should not be edited. They may be deleted when preparing a clean copy of the template because LaTeX will recreate them automatically.

The final thesis PDF will normally be generated as:

```text
thesis.pdf
```

---

## 12. Final Submission Checklist

Before submitting the thesis, confirm that:
