Professor Khaled Youssef Orabi My research focuses on the isolation, structural elucidation, and biological evaluation of bioactive natural products from plants, marine organisms, and microorganisms, particularly compounds with antimicrobial and antitumor activities. Using bioactivity-guided fractionation, I investigate promising natural products, prepare and evaluate semisynthetic derivatives, and optimize their activities through in silico modeling. Another research area involves using microbial systems to predict the mammalian metabolism of natural compounds.
My work integrates organism selection based on traditional medicinal uses and scientific evidence, biological screening of extracts and isolated compounds, chromatographic purification (including silica gel chromatography and HPLC), and structural characterization using 1D/2D NMR and mass spectrometry.

Associate Professor Fatma H M Alawadhi The research area of Al-Awadhi’s lab lies at the interface of chemistry and biology with an overreaching goal to discover and develop bioactive compounds for the treatment of human ailments. As with any drug discovery program, her research involves classical marine natural products chemistry combined with bioassay development, target identification, and mechanism of action studies. Al-Awadhi’s lab is also interested in the total synthesis of natural products, including the solvent-free synthesis of natural products and natural product-inspired core scaffolds using flash vacuum pyrolysis. This research is enhanced by multi-disciplinary collaborations with researchers from the Chemistry Department in the College of Science. Specifically, the workflow involves the characterization, NMR spectroscopic structure determination, as well as the screening of pyrolysis substrates and products using relevant bioassays.
